An Introuduction to Qadiriyya;

The Tariqa of Shaykh ‘Abdul Qadir Jilani(R.A)
In matters of Shari’a (sacred Muslim law), Mahbub Sub-hani Shaykh ‘Abdul Qadir Jilani Rady Allahu ‘Anhu was an authority in the Hanbali madhhab (school of sacred Muslim law) as well as the Shafi’i madhhab, and a chief exponent of the Ahl u’s-Sunnah wa’l Jama'ah (the people who follow the lifestyle of the Holy Prophet Muhammad and of his blessed Companions).
The way to draw nearer to Allah Ta'ala is through the fulfilment of obligatory religious duties, through constant remembrance (zikr) of Allah, unceasing salawaat (invocations of blessings) on the Holy Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam, fasting, charity, zuhd (abstinence) and juhd(exertion in the way of Allah Ta'ala) as exemplified by the Holy Prophet Muhammad himself. This then is the Tariqa (spiritual path leading to Allah Ta'ala) which is rooted in Shari’a (sacred Muslim Law).
Nonetheless in order to reach the level of Ihsan (perfection) Muslims need to strive and struggle to attain the pleasure, closeness and love of Allah through muraaqaba (meditation), mujahada (struggle), tafakkur (reflection), tadabbur (contemplation), mushahdah, Ikhlas (sincerity), taqwa (piety), zuhd (renunciation), zikr (rememberance), shukr (gratitude) and sabar (patience) which are all subjects of Tariqa derived from the Quran and sunnah.
As the great Imaam Junayd al Baghdadi said “This knowledge of ours is built of the Quran and sunnah”[12].

Some Examples include:
“And those who strive for us we will certainly guide them on the path” (Al Quran 30:69)
“Indeed Allah is with those who are patient” (Al Quran 2:53)
“O you who believe remember Allah abundantly” (Al Quran33:41)
“So worship Allah with sincerity” (Al Quran 43:64)
“O you who believe fear the way he ought to be feared” (Al Quran 3:102)

However In order to build or practice these inner traits of the self and feel the noor and pleasure of Allah’s worship one needs to entrust him/herself to a spiritual guide, (shaykh/pir) who has already embarked upon this journey of self purification and experienced the Devine as Allah says “O you who believe fear Allah and join those who are truthful” (Al Quran 9:119).
Moreover the companions entrusted themselves (bai’at) to the prophet to be enlightened and attain nearness to Allah as well as be purified and better people. Thereafter the disciples of the companions (Tabbies) adopted the suhba (company) of theSahaba (companions) in order to benefit from the noor that they received from the company of the prophet, thereafter the followers of the Tabieen (Taba Tabieen) adopted their company to taste the beauty of Eman that they achieved through the companions, that received it directly from the prophet and so on. This chain continued, continues and will continue till the day of judgement in the form of Silsilas and Tariqas named after the respective Shaykhs due to their methodology of attaining the closeness of Allah.
The Tariqa followed by Shaykh ‘Abdul Qadir Jilani Rady Allahu ‘Anhu came to be called after him as the Qadiriyya tariqa and it came to be universally accepted as a divinely-guided path to spiritual progress through zikr (remembrance) of Allah to cleanse one's heart of all evil, to lead a virtuous life, to attain the love of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam, the love of the Ahl u’l Bayt (the Prophet's blessed Household), the love of his Sahaba (Companions) and the love of the awliya Allah (friends of Allah); and to follow the shari’a (sacred Muslim law). May Allah Ta'ala be pleased with them all.
Shaikh Addul Qadir Jilani(R.A) was the Sultan of Saints. He was divinely called the Supreme Helper (Gauz-e-Azam). He begins one of his discourses as recorded in his well-known Collection of discourses, Divine Revelations “Fathur Rabbani”. “You make the devil of your Nafs be tired with the load of La Ilaha Illallahu Muhammadur Rasoolullah, Just as you make a Camel tired by loading him too much.”
Shaikh Gauz-e-Azam(R.A) is talking about the dikr of La Ilaha Illallahu Muhammadur Rasoolullahi, or the Kalima Tayyiba. That is the only path and way to make the Satan be tired. We cannot control or conquer the devil in ourselves using any of Dikrs other than Kalima Tayyiba. Shaikh(R.A) is not meaning the importance of Kalima Tayyyiba as an Inner Reality or Esoteric Knowledge. He indicates about the custom of Dikr or invocation given by Spiritual Guides or Pirs of different tariqas to their Murids for the purification of their selves. He is specifying the importance of Kalima Tayyiba as a Dikr or recitation/invocation.
Nonetheless, in many countries only the first half of Kalima Tayyiba is accepted in different Tariqas. Even in the daily invocations after the five times prayers also, Kalima is recited by half only. Guaz-e- Azam specifies the importance of full use of the Kalima Tayyiba without any cutting as eligible for sending the Satan away. When he say loading the Nafs with Kalima Tayyiba, his intention is to make ourselves tired by hardworking and fighting against impurities of Nafs. He has specified about this Kalima Tayyiba in his famous Book of “ Sirrul Asrar (The Secret of secrets). He cites the famous tradition of how Hazrath Ali(R.A) received this Kalima Tayyiba from Prophet Muhammad(S.A). It was the situation when Ali(R.A) received Khilafath of Kalima Tayyiba from Prophet(S.A).
Shaikh Gauz-e-Azam has specified in this well-famed Book of Sirrul Asrar about accepting Kalima Tayyiba from a Spiritual Guide as was tradition of Sahaba or the Companions with Prophet Muhammad(S.A). History has all the evidence of how Hazrath Ali(R.A) transmitted this tradition of Kalima Tayyiba to his successors through his Khalifas. This tradition or Spiritual chain continues in this world till now and it will continue till the end of world. Yet there exist many Qadiriyya Tariqas without fulfilling the whole Kalima Tayyiba. They cannot own the tradition of Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani(R.A) genuinely. His tradition can exist only with those who has fulfilled the tradition of whole Kalima in their lives and invocations. In Brief Tariqa or Tradition of Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani(R.A), is the Prophetic tradition of La Ilaha Illallahu Rasoolullahi only, and cannot be nothing else.
